      World Cancer Day 2026

In 1995, around 2.1 million people were diagnosed with cancer in Europe. By 2022, that number had grown by nearly 60%. Yet during the same period, cancer deaths increased by only 24%. This indicates that mortality is increasing at a slower rate than incidence, leading to 22 million cancer survivors in the EU in 2020.

While we have benefited from significant scientific breakthroughs supported by appropriate policy advances, much work remains to be done.

On World Cancer Day, we launch the first blog in a new series, where Thomas Hofmarcher explores key insights from the IHE Cancer Comparator report, commissioned by the EFPIA Oncology Platform.
